Aurora observation

Location: Ottawa, Illinois, USA. 44 deg, 28 min north -- 88 deg, 52 min west

An incredible auroral display tonight! (I'm writing this just minutes after midnight local time or 0600 UTC.) Deep red and bright green rays at times. Sometimes just a wash of light. At one point I saw rays going upward above me in a form that reminded me of the arctic crystal palace in the Superman movies. Ripples went through everything. Some from the north. Others from the south. They met in a multi-lipped convergence zone just a little south of the zenith.

I spotted the event at 0330 UTC and watched it for two hours from a city with moderate light pollution. By 0530 UTC it seemed to be over and I went inside.
