Report of Aurora

Location: Kingston, southern Tasmania (latitude about 43 S)
Date: 13 Nov 2003
Time: approx 11 pm local civil summer time, i.e. 12 UT, 13 Nov.
Sky: about 4/8 cloud

A greenish glow was noticed low on the southern horizon. Inspecting a cloud free area (of about 20 degrees horizontal by 10 degrees vertical extent) nearly due south, and nearly on the horizon, with 7x50 binoculars confirmed it was auroral in origin. Faint vertical rays could be seen forming and decaying over a few seconds. (Stars were also visible, meaning it was a cloud-free area I was looking at.) Observations were carried out only for about 10 minutes.
